do you have to insert a sim card or is it optional and do you need to pay fees when you het this thing also when you turn it on the first time do you need to like download it to something for example ipad download to i tunes

i’m torn. My upgrade from Verizon is in Feb. I’m really interested in having a small tablet like this. It’s a good in-between size between a droid phone and a tablet pc….
but, it’s not nearly as portable as a regular sized phone. and using it as a phone seems like it would be awkward unless you have a bluetooth headset. but even then… where do you keep the thing? I wouldn’t put it in my back or side pocket… it may be ok in the big cargo pocket on my shorts, but even then it’s at risk.
